Sesuai dengan Peraturan Pemerintah RI (PP) Nomor 10 Tahun 2018 tentang Badan Nasional Sertifikasi Profesi, BNSP memiliki tugas utama melaksanakan sistem sertifikasi kompetensi kerja.
Sertifikat Kompetensi merupakan produk hukum yang menjadi legitimasi (pengakuan) terhadap capaian kemampuan seseorang dalam melakukan pekerjaan tertentu yang ditetapkan oleh otoritas yang berwenang, berbasis pada standar kompetensi yang telah disepakati dan ditetapkan.
Tujuan Sertifikasi Kompetensi adalah untuk memastikan pada kompetensi seseorang yang telah didapatkan melalui pembelajaran, pelatihan, maupun pengalaman kerja. Dan sertifikasi diberikan oleh BNSP melalui Lembaga Sertifikasi Profesi (LSP) yang bisa mengetahui dengan pasti suatu kompetensi profesional pada bidang tertentu.
Calon tenaga kerja mapun tenaga kerja yang sudah memperoleh suatu sertifikat kompetensi maka calon tenaga kerja mapun tenaga kerja tersebut sudah dinilai profesional didalam membuat suatu sistem praktik kerja yang sangat berkualitas.

Kredibilitas suatu sertifikasi sangat ditentukan oleh organisasi atau lembaga pemberi sertifikasinya. Maka LSP SMKN 1 terus berupaya berbenah diri untuk menjawab tantangan LSP sebagai Penjaminan Mutu Tenaga Kerja yang Kompeten.
